Magnum Opus I

Magnum Opus was a collaborative project with Daniel Rubinstein spanning a period of four years from 1994-1998. Each of the three projects took two years to develop and realise, each was made to take place in five rooms within each gallery space aiming to use all spaces including offices and cellars.

Magnum Opus I – Showroom Gallery, London 1994.
Magnum Opus I was Ahsery’s first public performance outside college. Each object or activity in the space reflected the seven alchemical stages; ego, unity, levitation, purification, celibate machine and melting. The project was looking at the impossible alchemical search for purity. For example Ashery was translating from Hebrew to English and printing the pages out to send to participants who wrote their addresses on available envelopes, the process of translation in itself is never pure. Every space in the gallery was occupied including the office.
